Celebrate Local Filmmaking at the Riptide Film Festival in Torrance

TeamUncategorized

Here at Sachi and Co. Dentistry, we love being part of a community that takes creativity seriously. Torrance has plenty to offer when it comes to arts and culture, and one event that has quickly earned a spot on our calendar is the Riptide Film Festival. Now in its third year, this celebration of independent short films brings a little Hollywood glamour right to our neighborhood, and we are a proud sponsor.

Whether you are a lifelong movie lover, the parent of a budding high school filmmaker, or simply looking for something fun to do this fall, we put together everything you need to know about the festival. We also included a few tips to help you keep your smile healthy and camera ready for the red carpet.

What Is the Riptide Film Festival?

The Riptide Film Festival is a showcase of short films from independent filmmakers across Southern California. It is organized by three production companies, Riptide Films, Aureate Productions, and Evol Dog Productions, in association with the Torrance Cultural Arts Foundation, also known as TOCA. Evol Dog Productions was founded in 2021 by friends from the Torrance and South Bay area, and several of the festival's organizers grew up right here and graduated from local high schools. We love that this event was built by people who care about our community as much as we do.

Every film in the lineup runs 10 minutes or less, which makes for a fast-paced program of stories across every genre, from comedy and drama to thrillers and beyond. The festival receives around 150 submissions and selects roughly 20 films for the big screen, so audiences get a carefully curated evening of standout work. If one film is not quite your style, another fresh story is only minutes away.

When and Where to Go

The 2026 festival takes place on Saturday, October 17, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the James R. Armstrong Theatre, located at 3330 Civic Center Drive in Torrance. The theater seats 500 guests, giving the event a true movie premiere atmosphere without the long drive into Los Angeles.

Getting there is easy. Parking at the venue is free and plentiful, and the theater sits near several bus stops and a regional transit center. Rideshare drop off and pick up are simple as well. The Arts Center staff also works to accommodate guests with special needs, and wheelchair seating is available in several locations. If you need accommodations, you can note them when you purchase tickets or call the box office at least 48 hours before the event.

Two Waves of Fresh Talent

The festival lineup is divided into two categories, which the organizers fittingly call waves.

The High School Wave features short films from Southern California high school students, from freshmen all the way to seniors. Many of these projects began as final assignments in video production courses or as passion projects in school film clubs. Submissions in this category are free for students, which removes a real barrier for young creators. As a practice that cares for so many local families, we find it especially exciting to see teens from our area share their work in front of a full theater.

The Indie Wave is open to independent filmmakers throughout Southern California, including current college students and recent graduates. These films often take creative risks and showcase the kind of bold, original storytelling that could someday land on a much bigger stage. Seeing these artists early in their careers is part of what makes the festival so special.

Awards That Honor the Best of the Night

The evening wraps up with a grand award ceremony, which is included with admission. High school filmmakers compete for Best Short Wave, which honors the best overall film, along with Breakout Filmmaker for the best young director and A Cut Above for the most compelling storytelling.

Indie filmmakers compete for the Golden Crest Award for best overall film, Heart of the Tide for best screenplay, Rising Tide Filmmaker for best director, and Shoreline Spectacle for best cinematography. We love the ocean-inspired award names, which feel like a perfect nod to our coastal South Bay home. The judges may also present special awards to recognize exceptional talent or innovation beyond the listed categories, so there is always room for a surprise or two.

Tickets and the VIP Experience

A general admission ticket gives you access to all of the screenings and the award ceremony, making it easy to enjoy the full evening. For guests who want to go all out, the VIP Festival Pass adds professional red carpet photos, early seating, and access to a VIP lounge where you can network with filmmakers and fellow film fans.

Tickets are available through TOCA online and in person, and a limited number may be sold at the door on the day of the event. Keep in mind that every attendee needs a ticket regardless of age, so plan ahead if you are bringing the whole family. The venue will also offer concessions and merchandise throughout the night.

Keeping Your Smile Ready for the Red Carpet

With professional red carpet photos on the schedule, there is no better excuse to show off a healthy, confident smile. Since a night at the movies often comes with a trip to the concession stand, we want to share a few simple ways to protect your teeth while you enjoy the show.

Popcorn is a classic movie snack, but its thin hulls love to wedge themselves between teeth and under the gumline. Tucking a few floss picks into your pocket or purse makes it easy to clear away stubborn pieces before they cause irritation. Unpopped kernels are another hazard, since biting down on one can chip or crack a tooth. If you have a crown, filling, or other restoration, take extra care as you reach the bottom of the bag.

Sticky and chewy candies cling to the grooves of your teeth and feed the bacteria that cause cavities. Soda and other sugary drinks bathe your teeth in sugar and acid with every sip. To keep your smile protected, alternate your treats with plenty of water, which helps rinse away sugar and food particles. Choosing to enjoy sweets during the show rather than snacking slowly all night also limits how long your teeth are exposed.

Finally, resist the urge to tear open candy wrappers or bottle caps with your teeth. It is a common habit, but it can easily lead to chips and fractures. If you want your smile to shine in those red carpet photos, a professional cleaning or a whitening treatment ahead of a big event can make a noticeable difference, and our team is always happy to help.

Supporting the Arts in Our Torrance Community

Events like the Riptide Film Festival remind us how much talent lives right here in the South Bay. From high school students screening their very first projects to independent filmmakers sharpening their craft, every film on the program represents hours of hard work, imagination, and courage. Showing up in the audience is a meaningful way to encourage these artists and keep our local arts scene thriving.

We are proud to call Torrance home and to care for the smiles of so many families who make this community such a vibrant place to live. We hope you enjoy a wonderful evening at the movies, and we look forward to seeing your confident smile at your next visit.
